Apurímac: Adventure and Tradition in the Peruvian Andes

Founded in 1574, Abancay is a picturesque city with a strong cultural identity. Its gastronomy stands out with dishes like stuffed guinea pig, kapchi (a soup made with beans, milk, and eggs), and huatia (meat cooked on hot stones).

🏔 Saywite Archaeological Complex

One of the most impressive examples of Inca stone carving, featuring a monolith engraved with representations of flora, fauna, and hydraulic systems, likely a center of water worship.

🏛 Sondor and the Festival of the Condor

Near Lake Pacucha in Andahuaylas, this archaeological complex hosts the Sondor Raimy festival every June. This reenactment of the battle between the Chancas and the Incas is comparable to Cusco’s Inti Raymi.

🏔 Ampay National Sanctuary

Located near Abancay, this sanctuary protects forests of native intimpas trees and high-altitude lagoons, with trekking routes offering spectacular views.

🌊 Apurímac Canyon

One of the deepest canyons in the world, ideal for extreme sports like rafting and trekking. Its breathtaking landscape makes it a must-visit destination.

🌾 Curahuasi and Peru’s Finest Anise Liquor

This town is famous for producing the country’s best anise liqueur. It also serves as the gateway to the Apurímac Canyon and is a great spot to enjoy the peace of the Andes.

🥁 Abancay Carnival (April)

One of the region’s most joyful celebrations, featuring music, dances, and colorful parades. It’s a great opportunity to experience the hospitality of the locals.

🦅 Yawar Fiesta (July – Cotabambas)

One of Peru’s most traditional festivals, depicting a symbolic struggle between a condor and a bull, representing indigenous resistance against Spanish colonization.

📅 Best Time to Visit: Apurímac can be visited year-round, but the best time is from May to September when the weather is drier and sunnier, ideal for exploring its landscapes and archaeological sites.

🚍 How to Get There?

  • By Air: There is no airport in Abancay, but you can fly to Cusco or Ayacucho and take a bus (4-6 hours).
  • By Land: Direct buses from Lima to Abancay take approximately 15 hours. From Cusco, the bus ride takes around 4 hours.
